These are the prewriting instructions for the narrative: Choose a spot outside your home. You will use all five sensory imagery types to describe what you experience as you sit. Start with making a list of what you hear, see, feel, etc. Then write descriptions for each item. This does not have to be in paragraph form yet. Make sure you utilize color, sound, size, texture, etc. to make the descriptions more vivid. Example:

Grades 6-8 Word Count Limit: 350 words Looking at history, the people’s participation is one of the founding principles of democracy and American government. Why is it important that we still vote and participate in elections today? For more information, see the website: http://sos.tn.gov/products/essay-contest 2. Middle School students (grades 6,7,8) are invited to write an essay, from 100 to 400 words, on this topic: As Captain Ryman made his fortune on the Cumberland River, write an essay, explaining the role of the Cumberland River in the growth of Nashville and Middle Tennessee, both before and after the Civil War. Students who write winning essays will be recognized at performances of The Ryman Diaries, as the play is performed in school auditoriums during the 2016-17 school year. PBS Education’s 50 for 50 is a contest that reinforces the importance of students across the country having a voice in the political process. Students in 6th - 12th grade are invited to write an open letter to the 2016 Presidential Candidates with ideas on what needs to change in government to get more accomplished. Two students (one middle school and one high school) will win a trip to Las Vegas to view the final Presidential debate with the media. You will write your letter in a Google Doc, share it with me at [email protected], and I will submit all entries at the end of August. In order to earn the extra credit, you must turn it in by AUGUST 24! No exceptions!
